This creative and engaging educational presentation is being offered in an effort to promote understanding of DNA sequencing in the minds of community scientists, particularly mycologists.

Starting off with a review of the principles of molecular biology, the basics of genetic information will be outlined. Extraction and amplification methods alongside the latest DNA sequencing technologies will be explained within the context of mycology, including both Nanopore and Sanger sequencing. The scientific importance of this work will be demonstrated using cutting edge evidence from your peers, including the most current projects and published literature. With the ultimate aim of uncloaking the mystery surrounding DNA sequencing of fungi, the presenter will strive to make biomolecular concepts accessible to anyone, regardless of their educational background.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Molecular biologist and grant writer by training, Mandie Quark is a researcher, writer, and editor with a passion for the advancement of community science. Currently she is devoted to fungal DNA barcoding initiatives, and is excited to use her gift of creative communication to explain the technical complexities of sequencing technologies to her peers. Her work also includes being head of communications for the Fungal Diversity Survey (FunDiS) a biodiversity conservation organization, promoting her series of classes specifically tailored for mycologists, and event organizing as Foray Chair for the North American Mycological Association. Mandie just got back from Ecuador where she was exploring and collecting fungi for over a month, and she is excited to share some photos from Ecuador at the end of the presentation.
