Hongosto: Mushroom Traditions in Mexico

Thursday, August 19, 2021. | 7 p.m. OR 19:00 CST

Presented in English and Spanish

August marks the beginning of mushroom season or “Hongosto” in Mexico. Johann Mathieu from Micologica 360° will be joining us to talk about the culture of mushroom foraging, the history of mushroom use in Mexico and a little about the cultivation scene in his country. This online event will be bilingual and a Spanish language translator will be available for our Spanish speaking friends.

“Hongosto” is Spanish language play on words. It combines the word mushroom “hongo” and the month of August “Agosto.”

ABOUT THE PHOTO

This photo was taken in 2019 at the wild mushroom festival in the mountains in Oaxaca in a small village of Cuajimoloyas. We will be sharing more photos of Mexican mushroom culture leading up to the event.

About Micologica 360°

Micologica 360° disseminates the properties and applications of functional mushrooms through education, training and technical advice on identification, cultivation and processing of mushrooms in Mexico since 2010.

We work with rural communities and semi-urban populations from Oaxaca, Hidalgo , Edomex, Morelos, Queretaro, to Mexico City.

The combination of our international experiences in applied biotechnologies means that the different activities of the project take us from operating our mycological laboratory to isolate and propagate strains, provide inoculum to growers and farmers in our network, to elaborate highly functional fungal products. quality for the public, thus promoting the benefits that these mushrooms bring to our diet, health and planet.
