Join the Leadership Circle

We are seeking applications from mycology leaders in Central Texas.

If you believe fungi are foundational to terrestrial life on Earth and want to help others develop kinship with fungi through radical and collective action please join us. We are seeking leaders in Central Texas with technical and organizing skills that want to help us grow our 1,200+ member supported, volunteer-run non-profit. We have several open board positions. See requirements and details below!

About the Leadership Circle

Central Texas Mycological Society is currently a volunteer-run, sociocratic-circle organization. The leadership circle currently consists of enthusiasts, professional researchers, foragers, gardeners, and food systems practitioners who want to strengthen the mycelial bond in the Central Texas community. Within each circle is a leader the myceliates with members to accomplish the tasks in one of the following circles described below.

WHAT IS SOCIOCRACY

Sociocracy combines consent decision-making, a decentralized system of authority and intentional processes to improve decision-making and governance over time to support effective and efficient processes while increasing connection, listening and co-creation among members. Within each organizing circle or committee is a leader that is part of the Leadership Circle. There is no limit to the amount of organizing circles, and just like mycelium we can continue to grow. REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A CIRCLE LEADER (Board Member)

  • Be a member or volunteer

  • 2 year commitment leading the circle

  • Attend 10+ Leadership Circle meetings a year

  • Commit to 20 hours of service a month 

  • Commit to fundraise $2,000

  • Myceliate with members and lead circle to accomplish tasks in one of the circles below.

  • Be a member or volunteer

  • 1 year commitment co-leading the circle

  • Attend 10+ Leadership Circle or Events a year

  • Commit to 10 hours of service a month 

  • Myceliate with members and lead circle to accomplish tasks in one of the circles below.

  1. Please review the information below and select one of the circles to co-lead. If you are interested in being the leader of a circle and on the board please let us know in your application.

COMMUNICATIONS CIRCLE (OPEN BOARD POSITION) Apply Here

CIRCLE TASKS

  • Send out weekly email newsletter to members & non-members.

  • Share events on social media, with press, and other web event calendars.

  • Scheduled posts a week out and review with the education circle.

    • Distill content into digestible format for social media. 

    • Create posts about existing and ongoing programs that emphasizing the education components of a program 

    • Admin on discord, social media, respond to questions, or identify right people to answer 

    • Repost partner content related to Central Texas Mycology.

  • Manage and grow media and partner lists

  • Look at communication analytics to determine effective strategies 

  • Develop style guide and content strategy

CIRCLE TASKS

  • Organize the “Mushroom of the Month” membership giveaway contest

  • Maintain member list

  • Analyze membership numbers

  • Grow membership - new members but also enhance existing membership 

  • Organize and disseminate the annual membership survey

  • Member only special events - forays, happy hour

FUNDRAISING CIRCLE (OPEN BOARD POSITION) Apply Here

CIRCLE TASKS 

  • Create an annual budget - develop projections based on spending goals and fundraising goals 

  • Monitor info and pay educators, speaker’s honorarium 

  • Update and manage budget - ensure Quickbooks up to date

  • Organize fundraising initiatives - monitor progress and set goals

  • Work with grant writers; assist when needed

  • Work with team on special annual or bi-annual fundraiser

  • Create fundraising deck for soliciting donations

CIRCLE TASKS

  • Coordinate volunteers and mushroom farms for mushroom block giveaway

  • Develop volunteer on-boarding process  

  • Organize pop-up mushroom block giveaways

  • Work with education team to develop materials for how to use blocks 

  • Volunteer engagement - organize events to celebrate volunteer work

EDUCATION CIRCLE Apply Here

CIRCLE TASKS

  • Curate educational walks, talks, and workshops.

  • Filter inbound email inquiries from schools, community groups etc. 

  • Manage a list of CTMS educators based on expertise.

  • Connect CTMS educators with organizations that are looking for teachers 

  • Work with Communications Circle on marketing schedule

  • Website updates: Add events to the calendar and change the hero banner to reflect upcoming programs.

  • Partner with other educational nonprofits and schools.

  • Help manage and grow educational initiatives

  • Curriculum development - teacher resources, videos, handouts 

  • Create “Teach the Teachers” mycology certification programs

  • Report on education events
