AUSTIN: Star of Texas Mushroom Ceramic Workshop

What You’ll Learn:

The goal of this workshop will be to introduce participants to the basics of Star of Texas mushroom observation and ceramic sculpture through: 

  • Observing and identifying the Star of Texas mushroom

  • Learning basic techniques for ceramic slab construction 

  • Applying foundational ceramic construction skills to form a Star of Texas functional  sculpture

Schedule and Event Details:

The 3-Saturday workshop will include a Texas Star mushroom walk and 2 four-hour studio sessions at Austin Community College-Highland Campus. It is open to participants with all levels of artistic experience, including beginners.

Saturday January 3rd, Noon-2pm*:

The course will start with a field walk at a park in Central Austin with artist and ACC Biology Professor, Stephanie Martin. The group will discuss mycology and personal impressions from observing the mushroom where it grows. This first Saturday meeting will be shorter (Noon-2pm). Instructions for where to meet for the Star of Texas Mushroom Walk will be emailed to participants in advance.

Saturdays January 10th and 17th, Noon-4pm:

Participants will then participate in a studio day of ceramic construction basics with ACC Ceramic Professor, Lauren Tompkins, where they will create their own Star of Texas Mushroom inspired functional vessel. During the second studio day, participants will learn and apply the basics of ceramic glazing and firing. Participants will be able to pick up and take home their final pieces a week after the final studio session. Information about studio safety, what to wear, and where the studio is will be emailed to participants in advance.

Pricing and Materials:

$275 per participant (**Very limited student pricing available)

Pricing includes all instruction and materials.

In addition to a Star of Texas Mushroom walk and 8-hours of ceramic instruction, participants will take home:

  • Their ceramic, glazed, lidded vessel with a Star of Texas Mushroom 

  • A ceramics tool kit that includes: a serrated rib, red rib, needle tool, blade and hook tool, wood knife

  • A PDF version of the Star of Texas Mushroom lidded vessel template used in the course so they could make it again
